Calcium Counts

More than a third of Australians over 60 will have a fracture due to weak bones. Don't be one of them!

Nearly half of Australians do not get enough calcium, causing their bones to become weak

As we age, our bones become even weaker (osteopenia) until they can become so fragile they are likely to break (osteoporosis).

Adults need 1000-1300mg of calcium per day to keep their bones strong. But our bodies can only utilise about 500mg at a time. So we need to eat calcium-rich foods throughout the day.

Here's how to get the calcium you need

Recommended Calcium Intake

1-3 years = 500mg

4-8 years = 700mg

9-11 years = 1000mg

12-18 years = 1300mg

Over 19 years = 1000mg

Women over 50 = 1300mg

Men over 70 = 1300mg

Calcium Supplements

Studies have found that calcium supplements can increase the risk of heart attacks, kidney stones and gastrointestinal problems, while calcium intake from food is safe. If you're not able to obtain the recommended amount of calcium from food, then a daily supplement of 500-600mg a day is generally safe, but it's always better to get it from food if possible.

Also consider vitamins D and K2!
